State trio set for Worlds challenge
Karnataka's top three women cueists, Vidya Pillai, Chitra Magimairaj and Varshaa Sanjeev will look to continue with their fine fom.
Bengaluru: High on confidence following their exploits at the World 6-Red snooker a couple of months ago, Karnataka's top three women cueists, Vidya Pillai, Chitra Magimairaj and Varshaa Sanjeev will look to continue with their fine fom at the World Snooker Championships which begins in Daugavpils, Latvia Nov. 27.
Varshaa, who in her maiden appearance in an international event won a team bronze with Chitra is excited about her second outing.
“I'm not really nervous going into this tournament and there isn't much pressure from the last one. I've been training everyday . But this time I am traveling with my team and my dad won't be there with me so I'm not sure how that feeling will be yet,“ said the 16year-old.
Chitra who this week slipped to the third spot in the state ranking said, the recent slump in form will have no bearing on her performance. “I'm really happy that we're participating in so many tournaments and am confident going into this one. Finishing third in the state meet won't really affect me because the format is different. Things just didn't fall in place for the state championship starting from my entry which I sent in late as I was unsure of my participation and then I didn't change the tip of my cue at the right time.“
Vidya, who has been on a golden run this season, winning the national and state snooker crowns, wears the expectations rather lightly.
“I don't feel any pressure going into the World Cham pionship at all. I have been practicing for the past one month regularly and am confident going into the tournament. Winning gold in the previous tournament was good But this a new one with new challenges.“
Meanwhile, in a bid to encourage cue sports in the state, Indian Oil and Bank of Baroda have stepped forward to sponsor the Karnataka State Ranking sub juniors, juniors, women and senior men championships.
