Aerospace exports flying high

Spacecraft-aircraft exports zoom 485%, underscoring India’s might in delivering high-tech items.

Mumbai: Exports under the “Spacecraft-Aircrafts” went up year-on-year by a robust 485 per cent while for ships and boats, the critical consignments increased even by higher percentage of 678 in October, 2013 sending a strong signal globally about India’s capabilities to deliver mission critical engineering materials.

While the components of spacecraft-aircraft were exported mostly to the US and Europe, the components for ships and boats also went to the South-East Asian countries.

Underscoring the turnaround story in exports being led by high-tech items like aircraft-spacecraft parts and the material used in the nuclear reactors, EEPC (formerly Engineering Export Promotion Council) India eastern region chairman Arun Kumar Garodia said, “There are signs of heavy resurgence in the ship and boats, lead products, aircraft, IC engines and nuclear reactors among other high technology items.”

Exports in the spacecraft-aircraft category shot up to $536 million in October from $92 million last October; while the exports of ships and boats saw an increase from $38 million to $295 million.
T. S. Bhasin, senior vice-chairman, EEPC India said despite the global slowdown India had managed decent exports because of diversifying export markets and reducing the dependence on traditional markets.

The total engineering exports went up by an impressive 35.65 per cent to $5.58 billion in October, 2013 while for the cumulative April-October period it went up 5.19 per cent to $34 billion.

The country-wise analysis shows markets like USA remain in the negative (11 per cent) while exports picked up to the UAE (32 per cent), Italy (15 per cent), Saudi Arabia 10 per cent.
