A fresh wave of talent
Dehit the screens like a giant wave in his debut film 'Thira' and came up with a raw and highly intense performance that showcased his calibre. Dhyan Sreenivasan has proved that he is no less than his father Sreenivasan and brother Vineeth Sreenivasan when it comes to acting.
Clad in a white tee and denims, Dhyan comes across as a breath of fresh air. No clichéd and diplomatic answers, he chooses to be candid with his views and opinions. With his disarming smile and intense eyes, he is totally at ease when we catch him for a chat in his Kochi flat.
Dhyan was lucky to make his debut in a film directed by brother Vineeth and scripted by their cousin Rakesh Mantodi. The biggest factor in his favour was the perfect communication between the three.
“Having sat together during the scripting stage we were constantly in the know and so acting out the part became easy," recalls Dhyan.
Talking of his equation with his brother whilst shooting, Dhyan says, “He saw me as an artiste and 'Thira' is a director's film. For me, it was as if my brother had assigned me a task and I had to make sure that I put in my cent percent effort into that task!"
Most star sons would not want to play second fiddle in their debut film, but Dhyan considers it to be a blessing. He candidly says, “It is when Shobhana ma'am's character came up, that the script acquired a depth and the story is told from a female perspective. Personally, it was a positive challenge to share screen space with Shobhana as her presence reduced the risk factor for me. I was safe in the sense that I had a strong actor opposite me. While ma'am's character is largely the same, mine evolves and goes through different emotions and layers as the film progresses."
Acting with Shobhana made him nervous. He says that Shobhana would concentrate on learning her dialogues and he would be sitting in the corner watching and wondering if he would match up to her. “During the first shot, I could not even look at ma'am's face, I was amazed, impressed and confused!" he says disarmingly.
On the personal front, Dhyan says that his parents and brother have been the wind under his wings.
He says, “Unlike other parents, mine gave me a lot of freedom and space and had faith that I would turn out good! The only time my parents were sad was when I dropped out of my engineering in my third year. But ultimately felt it was all about my happiness. My father believed I was an escapist; maybe I should have explained my choices to my father but somehow that did not happen."
Meanwhile, Dhyan joined VISCOM in Chennai and learnt the technical aspects of film making and even made a shortfilm that Vineeth produced for him.
Currently, he is listening to a few scripts and says that the screen play is the most important factor to him.
He ends by saying, “I always believed that my time would come. I just went on to do what I wanted to do!"
