Zinfandel is food friendly
What I like about the Red Zinfandel is its sheer versatility. In fact, with Thanksgiving round the corner, it is the right time to enjoy this wine. It pairs perfectly with the famed Turkey as well. It is a vibrant, racy, wine, which can be enjoyed with just about anything. Any meat, chocolates or desserts. And on any occasion. Or for no reason at all, too. The combination of fruity flavours and spices make it unusual.
I was lucky to enjoy Nicole Carter’s company over a glass of Red Zinfandel recently. She is the global brand ambassador of Treasury wine estates and specialises in wines from California.
The Beringer Founder’s Estate Zinfandel is the quintessential California rich and intense wine. The notes of vanilla and nutmeg, get me intoxicated instantly. It is heady, without a doubt. The hint of pepper on the finish is what further makes it interesting. Unlike many reds that I have tasted, and am not a great fan of reds, this Zinfandel has a smooth mouth feel. It is definitely a food-friendly wine, which endears everyone instantly.
Something that struck me as exceptional, was the fact that Red Zinfandel can be bottled on its own or with other grapes like Syrah, Grenache and so on. Probably that’s what adds to its adaptable character.
Therefore I was not surprised when Arun Kumar, co-founder, Aspri Spirits told me, “Beringer is an iconic brand of the US’s well known wine region and we are confident it will be well-received in India by our consumers.” A friend once treated me to a rich, aromatic, Zinfandel with a long finish in London. Spicy with hints of wild berry, Kenwood Jack London, was one of the best Zinfandels.
A Red Zinfandel may be known for its deep red colour and complexity. But for me, it is a simple wine, one that I can easily comprehend, enjoy and cherish.
