Does your hair really need oil?
This week, we bust some age-old myths about oiling your hair:
Myth: Oiling your hair will make it grow longer and help retain hair colour. It’s also helps in conditioning the hair.
Myth Busted: Dr Saguna Puttoo, a cosmetic dermatologist at Apollo Skin Clinic, completely shatters this myth: “Oiling hair has absolutely no medical benefit, and neither does it aid hair growth.”
But before you show this to your mother and tease her about being wrong, read what Dr Padmaja Pinjala, dermatologist at Yashoda, says, “Oil used in moderate amounts helps retain moisture in hair, provided you don’t use copious amounts of shampoo. Just apply a little oil to your hair and wash it off after two to three hours.”
Does that mean you continue oiling your hair? “Unless you have acne or a hair-follicle infection, it’s okay to do so,” she says.
