Ghat protests politicised: NSS, SNDP
Kochi: At a time when the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Conference hardens its stand on the Kasturirangan report and the IUML rejects the Gadgil report and demands further discussion on the Kasturirangan report, two major Hindu outfits say that the current agitations are politicised and have backed the high court observation in this connection.
NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair told DC that he was yet to make a detailed study of the Kasturirangan report. “We will certainly come out with our stand after studying it,” he said. As stated by the high court, some sections have reacted without studying the report, he said.
“All reactions should have been made after studying the report. What is seen are politicised reactions,” he said. SNDP general secretary Vellappalli Natesan told DC that at a time when the central ministers have said that the report will be implemented after taking suggestions within 60 days, there was no need to rush into agitations.
“We have to believe them. This agitation is quite similar to the recent Mullapperiyar agitation when the people realised much later that they were fooled by some sections who said that the dam would crumble soon. We are not to hitch-hike on the bandwagon of the current anti-Kasturirangan agitation,” he said.
He also underscored the high court observation of the people going into agitations without studying the report. “I understand that large townships, quarries and sand mining will be restricted as per the report. Are these not good things for the future,” he asked.
