New townships mooted

Rs 40 crore water transport project submitted.

Kochi: The city could see new townships and a slew of other mega developmental projects related to transport and infrastructure taking shape in the near future to help the Kochi Metro Rail serve it better, according to Union minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution, Prof. K.V Thomas.

Inaugurating a city water bus service connecting the Vyttila mobility hub and Kakkanad, here on Tuesday, he said the state government was actively considering setting up townships along the Vallarpadam Container Terminal Road.

“Big infra projects have to be conceived to make the Metro Rail feasible. An integrated transport system placing greater emphasis on water transport will be developed along with the Metro Rail. The government and the civic body are focusing on promoting a better water transport system as it has already been included in the next phase of the JNNURM,” the minister said.

Managing director of (KMRL), Elias George in his address, said a proposal for mega water transport projects worth Rs 40 crore had been submitted to the Centre. “Sanction for the projects is expected in December and they could be launched in March next year. Around 75 modern, light and faster boats will be introduced on various routes as part of the project,” he explained.

The new city water bus that helps passengers from Vyttila reach Kakkanad in 20 minutes, will have six services a day. While only two boats will be used to begin with, more may be added depending on the demand. Additional stopovers could also be introduced based on the requirements of local residents and the jetty facilities available.

Meanwhile, district collector P.I Sheikh Pareeth has reportedly given his approval for feeder bus services operated by the Kudumbasree Mission to provide connectivity between Chittethukara - where the jetty is situated - and Kakkanad.
