I respect and love Chennai: Stanislas Wawrinka
Chennai: Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka, current world no.8, has confirmed his participation in the 2014 Chennai Open tennis tournament.
The 19th edition of India's only ATP event begins at the SDAT Stadium from December 30. Last year, Wawrinka wowed he Indian fans as he ifted the doubles itle with his French partner Benoit Paire in a thrilling final. The Olympic doubles gold medalist will be partici pating in the tournament for the sixth successive year. He vows to start the new season on a win ning note like he did here in 2011 capturing the singles crown.
“I am glad to say that the event will mark my sixth visit to Chennai. I have grown to respect and love the city. As always, I am really look ing forward to experienc ing the excitement and support of the people,“ said Wawrinka. The 28-year-old has had a terrific 2013 season, qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals and giving his opponents a tough fight for the title.
In his debut, the Lausanne-native reached the semi-finals of the season finale and though he fell to eventu al champion Novak Djokovic, he finished the year on a high, compil ing a career-best 51-23 match record -including nine victories against top 10 players.
In September 2013, Wawrinka proved his class at the US Open yet again. He reached the quarterfinals for the first time in three years after a four-set win over Tomas Berdych and followed this by defeating defending champion Andy Murray in three sets for a first Grand Slam semifinal appearance.
While he experienced a five-set loss against Djokovic, Wawrinka impressed the tennis world with his confidence and proficiency. The Chennai Open, one of three ATP tournament held in the opening week of the season, promises to give the subcontinent access to a week of scintillating tennis action, featuring some of the best names in the highly competitive world of international tennis.
Wawrinka said the Chennai Open organisers are doing a great job in raising the bar every year. “I still remember the exciting atmosphere during my doubles final last year. I can't wait to play there again. I am hoping to enjoy many more victories in front of Indian fans,“ added Wawrinka, who won the gold medal at Beijing Olympics partnership his illustrious compatriot Roger Federer.
Wawrinka has also cemented his position as one of the prominent names in top 10. He earned his place for the first time since May 2008 when he made it to the semifinals of the US Open and Madrid Masters finals.
Tamil Nadu government, the platinum sponsors, has already sanctioned '2 crore to facilitate the Chennai Open apart from '4 crore for upgrading the stadium.
M.A. Alagappan, president of Tamil Nadu Tennis Association, said the success of Chennai Open wouldn't be possible without the support of the state government. “Wawrinka has had a fantastic season. Our event has been growing in popularity thanks to players like him."
