Hyderabad: The Panjagutta police on Monday arrested the thief who stole cash from a customer a week ago at the Andhra Bank branch in Srinagar Colony. The cops recovered the entire amount from him. The cash was stolen for the treatment of his wife, cops said.

The accused arrested is Konda Srinivas Reddy alias Srinivas, 39, a farmer and resident of Bagh Amberpet. He is a native of Malayal village in the Siddipet Mandal of Medak district.

Detective inspector K. Sathaiah said that Srinivas came to the city to get his wife admitted at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences. He went to the Andhra Bank branch in Srinagar Colony to encash a cheque, which was rejected as the signature did not tally.

Meanwhile, Chinna Nagi Reddy, an accountant at Met Chem Ltd. came to the bank to deposit the 2,30,000 given by the management. As he had to fill up vouchers he left the money bag at the counter. Srinivas who came to the cash counter noticed the bag.

“He found the cash in the yellow bag with no one to claim it. He saw that people around were busy, and slowly flicked it from the counter and walked away,” Sathaiah said. Based on the CCTV footage of the bank, Srinivas was arrested from Nims. “During interrogation, he said that due to the ill health of his wife, and the need for money, he had committed the theft,” Sathaiah said.
