Chennai: A 70-year-old man, allegedly upset over his vision loss, committed suicide by jumping from the foot overbridge near Tidel park in Taramani on busy Old MahabaÂlipÂuram Road on Monday. The man, who fell on a moving car, died on the spot, the police said.
The man, identified as Kuzhandaisamy, resided at Karumari Amman Koil street in Anbazhgan nagar with his wife Kamatchi and a son. He was working as a cook in the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and had retired recently. Post-retirement he had taken up a similar job in a hospital in Adyar, the police said.
Primary Investigations revealed that the man had lost vision in both eyes three months ago and was depressed over this. This might have forced him to take the fatal step, observed a police officer.
The officer added that on Monday morning, the man had visited the government Royapettah hoÂsÂpital for treatment.
Around 1 pm, he was walking on the foot overbridge opposite Tidel park and all of a sudden, juÂmped from it, the polÂice quoted onlookers as saying.
The man fell on a moving car driven by Rajendran, who along with other passersby, rescued him and called the ambulance service. But before the medical team could arrive at the spot, the man died, the police added.
