Philip, his monkey pen and twenty kids

Volunteers of SARSAS arrange show of 'Philip and the Monkey Pen' for 20 girls of their society.

Twenty little girls of Mahilamandiram, Thiruvananthapuram, giggled, cheered and clapped with Ryan Philip on a Saturday morning. They went to the Kairali Theatre to watch 'Philip and the Monkey Pen' with 11 volunteers of the charitable society Save A Rupee, Spread A Smile (SARSAS).

“They were so happy that they were clapping throughout the movie," says Deepa, president of SARSAS. “We wanted to take them out as part of the Children's Day celebrations."

The movie tickets were sponsored by a person who doesn't want to be named, Deepa says. After the movie, the kids had a lunch at the Sabari Park in Thiruvananthapruam with the volunteers. “The hotel is owned by Prashant who has recently joined our network."

After lunch, they sat in a conference hall and played games. The girls began to play with a mike they found, telling their names aloud.

“This time only the smaller ones joined us -girls up to sixth standard. The Mahilamandiram was reluctant to send the older girls out with so many 'boy' volunteers. We hope to take the older ones out for a movie once we have enough girl volunteers,“ says Deepa.
