Planning your home storage
With increased incomes, we are always buying stuff for our homes.
And the more we buy, the more we need to put older stuff in storage. Managing storage is no rocket science, just needs a little planning. First divide your storage items into different types. This will help you identify the need and design of storage.
Display-cum-storage in common areas: Storing books and installing your TV in the midst of the display cabinet is a nice idea. Collectables can be beautifully displayed along with books. Trophies and photographs in different forms, like on mugs, small cushions with family photos, are all excellent display ideas.
Storage of personal stuff in bath rooms and dressing rooms: In bathrooms storage has to have space for towels, toiletries and also a few books. In the dressing room, plan for all your personal items.
Kitchen and storeroom: Keep place for crockery, cutlery, grocery, and everyday cooking stuff. Make space under the kitchen counter for storage of utensils. Have a semi-visible glass-doored cupboard for display of cutlery and crockery in the kitchen if you don't have a store room. Also, have your grocery space planned in the kitchen if a store room is not available. Do not forget to plan space for laundry and its storage. Preferably near the kitchen area so that it's easily accessible to your maid.
Garden and garage storage: Plan lots of storage space on one side of the garage or as available. Your garden gadgets, car accessories and sports stuff can be stored (golf kit, badminton racket, kids sports items) here.
Once the above are listed, make a note of the space you have and whether you want to work on expanding the storage space if possible.
