BJP moves Election Commission against Rahul Gandhi's 'party of thieves' comments

Oppn party moves EC against Congress Vice President terming him as a 'habitual offender'.

Kharsiya (Chhattisgarh): With the bitter war of words between Cong and BJP intensifying, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday dubbed BJP as a 'party of thieves' and accused it of 'looting natural resources' of Chhattisgarh.

Stepping into action, BJP petitioned the Election Commission seeking action against the Congress Vice President.

In its complaint, the party termed Gandhi as a 'habitual offender' and termed Congress as a 'history-sheeter' party in violating the model code of conduct and laws of the land.

"I want one thing from the son of Nandkumar Patel.... I want not one but around 500 Nand Kuma Patels. I will not bring them from Delhi, I want them from the crowd here who can stand up and kick out BJP from here... these thieves from here," Rahul said while addressing a poll rally in Kharsiya, the home constituency of slain state unit Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel, ahead of the second phase of polling on Tuesday.

Patel, along with top state Congress leaders, was killed in a Naxal ambush in Bastar's Jiram Ghati on May 25.

Touching an emotional chord, Rahul said tribals and dalits of Chhattisgarh were forced to fight the Jiram Ghati-like battle everyday for want of development. "On May 25, Nand Kumar Patel was killed in Jiram Ghati.

(However) For common tribals and dalits every day is May 25 and every place is Jiram Ghati. Atrocities on women is also May 25 and when youth are devoid of education then that day is also May 25 and that place is Jiram Ghati," Rahul said.

Congress has fielded Patel's son Umesh Patel from this constituency, going to polls on November 19 in the second and final phase of the elections. Launching a blistering attack on BJP, Rahul said, "Patel had told me that Chhattisgarh is a rich state. Land, forest, mines belongs to people but all these things are being looted from them. It should benefit people". Lauding the efforts of Patel, he said, the PCC chief never wanted to be a minister or a candidate for elections but only wanted to serve the common people.

"Watching him (Patel) for the first time, I felt that he will become chief minister as he was connected with the people and the ground. Whenever I talked with him, he never spoke of becoming candidate or minister. He always said that he wanted to fight for the people," Rahul said.

Alleging that natural resources are being looted in Chhattisgarh, the Congress vice-president said, "If the wealth of this state is given to women, children and people, this state can emerge like Delhi and Haryana". Rahul further said, "Had Nand Kumar Patel became chief minister, then he would have been the CM for 15 years because he was associated with common man and knew their plight".

BJP seeks stern action against Rahul

New Delhi: The BJP complaint has sought stern action against Gandhi in the wake of the poll body expressing displeasure over his certain remarks against BJP and his linking the Muzaffarnagar riot victims to Pakistan's ISI and asking him to be more cicumspect in future.

"We have sought stern action against Rahul Gandhi as he has become a habitual offender like his party which is a history-sheeter in violating the law," said BJP Vice President Muktar Abbas Naqvi.

He claimed the use of the word 'chor' (thief) to describe a party and its leaders is a 'clear cut violation of the model code of conduct' and demanded stern action from the poll watchdog.

Naqvi said a delegation of BJP leaders will also meet the Chief Electoral Officer of Chhattisgarh and demand action besides presenting another memorandum to him.
