Samsung smartphones outsold Apple counterparts by nearly three times in Oct-Nov

Samsung is way ahead of Apple when it comes to global smartphone sales, reveals survey.

Johannesburg: Samsung is reportedly leading Apple when it comes to global smartphone sales in the three months ending in November 2013, a survey by Gartner has revealed.

The survey found that Samsung maintained its market share on smartphones at 32.1 percent with sales of over 80 million devices compared to 55 million in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Apple also increased it number of units sold to 30 million, but accounted for just 12.1 percent of the smartphone market, a 2 percent decline from last year, News24 reports.

Gartner said that Apple began shipping late which may have had an impact on sales of its iPhone 5s and 5c.

Principal analyst at the research firm, Anshul Gupta said that the arrival of the new iPhones 5s and 5c had a positive impact on overall sales, but it could have been greater had Apple not started shipping late in the quarter.

According to the report, Google's Android continued its dominance of the operating system market, surpassing 80 percent in market share, followed by Apple's iOS at 12.1percent.
