Aaralam Wildlife Sanctuary at the northern most of Kerala was established in 1984. The headquarters of the sanctuary is near Iritty, a small town in Kannur. The sanctuary, spread over 55 km, is covered with dense forest on the slopes of Western Ghats.
The highest peak in the sanctuary - Katti Betta - is 1,145 m above sea level. A tropical and semi evergreen forest, it is the home for a vast variety of flora and fauna. Herds of deer, elephants and bisons are common here. Leopards, jungle cats and variety of squirrels can also be found.
The famous river Cheenkannipuzha forms the main water resource for the living things in the forest. A network of small streamlets joins the river at different points. Narikadavuthodu, Kurukkathodu and Meenmuttithode are some of the main streamlets. The Meenmuttithode Waterfalls near the watch tower is an ideal place to relax. The Ambalapara peak is also worth a visit.
About 490 hectares of teak and eucalyptus plantation are part of this bio-rich forest. The hilly terrains provide ample opportunities for trekking, while the predominantly evergreen forest swarming with various species of flora and fauna sets the stage for some delightful outdoor activities. Another interesting pursuit is the trek from Valayanchat to Meenmutty covering a distance of 14 km. The calm Aralam River, not far from the sanctuary, is an ideal picnic spot.
