Kumaraswamy in sugar scam, says Congress MP

Congress MP alleges Kumaraswamy of receiving Rs 5 crore for Sugar mill.
Mysore: Congress Member of Parliament from Mysore, A.H. Vishwanath alleged on Wednesday that former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had received a Rs 5 crore kickback from Ambika Sugar for allowing it to take over the Sriram sugar factory in K.R. Nagar taluk on lease during his term in office, leading to its present troubles.

“The takeover literally broke the Sriram factory , but ironically Kumaraswamy is now talking about about saving it,” he told reporters here.

The MP was rebutting Kumaraswamy's charge that the Congress was indifferent to the problems of farmers and was doing nothing to revive the Sriram sugar factor although the matter was discussed in the last assembly session. The JDS leader had accused the Chief Minister and four ministers who belonged to Mysore district and Vishwanath of showing little interest in the matter.

Referring to the five-day padayatra being taken out by the BJP under the leadership of former minister S.A. Ramdas, Vishwanath claimed it was a political gimmick only meant to impress voters ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. “The padayatra is nothing but a mockery of democracy,” he maintained.

Hitting out at the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his “poor knowledge of Indian history,” he accused him of trying to mislead the people by giving them his own version of it.
