Playing a new role

Model-turned-actor Amrita Raichand talks about her Bollywood stint and how modelling remains her first love.

Known as the Whirlpool mom, Amrita Raichand, a popular face in television commercials, took to acting in films only recently. She debuted with 'Baat Bann Gayi' and will now be seen in Subhash Ghai's 'Kaanchi'.

Without divulging too much about her role she tells us, “It's a very complex role, opposite Rishi Kapoor. Not many women may agree with my character. But as an actor, one has to play all sorts of roles. And when someone like Mr Ghai writes your character, you just go with the flow."

Amrita believes that the man lives up to his image of a true showman. “He is larger than life -very expressive with his feelings and thoughts. He is a wonderful director and made me feel special every time I steeped foot on the sets," she says.

The model-turned-actor admits that sharing screen space with Rishi Kapoor was no less than a dream come true for her. “Mr Kapoor has a strong personality and lights up the screen every time he makes an appearance. He is magic on screen. When he saw me perform my first scene on the sets, he said that I reminded him of Dimple Kapadia of yesteryears. Not sure how much he meant it, but I felt truly chuffed," she adds with a grin.

Amrita believes she has a bright career ahead despite her debut 'Baat Bann Gayi' failing to create a buzz at the box office.

“It is natural to feel bad when a person works hard on a project and it does not do as well as expected. But I take solace in the fact that despite being a small budget film it got a good release. Personally, I was happy to be appreciated by the viewers and critics," she says.

Amrita plans to continue doing commercials and television shows, because work is work.

“I like working, period. Whether it's television shows, advertisements or hosting live events. Also, after working in over 100 advertisements, it is only natural for me to have a soft corner for that line of work," says Amrita who considers herself blessed in terms of work. “I have never had to go hunting for work. I put my heart and soul in every project I commit to and leave the rest to God," she adds.
