11 Killed As Four-Storey Building Falls in Delhi

Six survivors, among them another of Tehseen’s sons, Chand (25), were discharged from hospital after treatment; nine others, including Tehseen’s wife, remain under care. NEW DELHI: In the early hours of Saturday, a 20-year-old, four-storey residential building in Mustafabad, northeast Delhi, collapsed, killing 11 people and injuring as many others, police and rescue officials said.

Around 3.02 am, officers from Dayalpur police station and teams of the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Service and volunteers rushed to Gali No. 1 in Shakti Vihar, where 22 residents — mostly families — were trapped under the rubble.

After more than 12 hours of rescue operations, 11 bodies were recovered, including the building owner Tehseen (60), his immediate family — son Nazeem (30), wife Shahina (28) and their children Anas (6), Afreen (2) and Afan (2) — as well as daughter-in-law Chandni (23), brothers Danish (23) and Naved (17), Reshma (38) and Ishaq (75).

Six survivors, among them another of Tehseen’s sons, Chand (25), were discharged from hospital after treatment; nine others, including Tehseen’s wife, remain under care. Locals told reporters that nearby construction work and years of sewer water seepage had weakened the building’s walls, causing cracks and making the structure fragile; residents of adjacent buildings described feeling tremors like an earthquake.

A Municipal Corporation of Delhi statement noted the building’s age and said a preliminary inspection found its design failed to meet required load-bearing standards; MCD officials will survey the area for similarly risky structures and seal unsafe floors. Police have registered a case under sections 290, 106, 125 and 125(a) of the Penal Code against Tehseen. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered a formal probe and vowed strict action against those responsible, posting on X that she was “deeply saddened” and had “given orders to investigate the incident.” Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav instructed party workers to assist in rescue and relief efforts, while AAP leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Leader of Opposition Atishi expressed condolences and urged support for affected families.
