Village near Tiruchengode boycotts poll

At the end of the day, at the two polling booths set up in Animoor village, only 15 other persons, who had come for election work, cast their votes.

Namakkal: Barring a woman voter, 1,284 persons of Animoor village near Tiruchengode falling under Namakkal Lok Sabha constituency, on Thursday boycotted the polls in protest against their village being used as a garbage dump yard for all the municipal waste generated in Tiruchengode town.

Even as polling hours commenced at 7 am today and just one woman from that village exercised her franchise, all the others numbering 1,284 voters stood their ground to boycott the elections in protest against their repeated pleas not to dump the wastes from Tiruchengode in their village, falling on deaf ears.

Hearing of the villagers protest boycott, the revenue divisional officer (RDO) Maniraj, rushed to Animoor and held talks with the angry voters, in a bid to persuade them to come to the polling booth and vote. But the voters stood en bloc and rock solid, replying that they have decided not to vote in any election until the garbage dumb yard was shifted out of their village as it posed serious health issues.

At the end of the day, at the two polling booths set up in Animoor village, only 15 other persons, who had come for election work, cast their votes, much to the embarrassment of the authorities.
