Bamboo revival gets push from Karnataka govt

Govt’s incentives for bamboo cultivation Farmers struggle to sustain bamboo plantation.

Bengaluru: Lalbagh – the city’s lung space saw a bamboo extravaganza to commemorate World Bamboo Day on Wednesday. Bamboo Cultural Fest ’19, is an initiative of Bamboo Society of India- Karnataka Chapter (BSI-KC), supported by Department of Horticulture, government of Karnataka.

Dr. K. Sundar Naik, Chairman, BSI said, “Bamboo areas vanished to make way for teak plantations in the British era. They thought Bamboo was a weed and replaced it with teak. So much that the paper mills like in Bhadravathi had to shift to eucalyptus and acacia.”

Govt’s incentives for bamboo cultivation Farmers struggle to sustain bamboo plantation. Karnataka Bamboo Mission has launched the ‘Be a Bamboo Grower’, and bamboo saplings were distributed to farmers by S.G. Neginhal, IFS officer (Retd) and founding member of BSI. Over 80 participants enrolled for workshops conducted by CGBMT and Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) to spread awareness of bamboo articles like earrings, hair pin, music amplifier, mobile holder, etc.
