Proposals for dedicated channels across Godavari

A plan was prepared in 1990s by the then district collector Ranadeep Sudan during Godavari Pushkaralu.

KAKINAD: The need for Dedicated Channels in various places across River Godavari has been stressed. If a dedicated channel can be constructed from Rajahm-undry to Kakinada, all sewage and industrial water can be released in to the Bay of Bengal, after treating it and then more than half of the pollution can be reduced from the sea.

A plan was prepared in 1990s by the then district collector Ranadeep Sudan during Godavari Pushkaralu. But later, the governments did not take care of the project, even though two Pushkaralu events were completed. Meanwhile, environmentalist T. Patanjali Sastry advised the governments of four states—Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh— to create a fund, especially for cleansing River Godavari and to take steps so that the river can be protected.

Meanwhile, Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation has prepared a plan for construction of 30 MLD Sewage Plant under the National River Conservation Project Scheme. In Andhra Pradesh, Rajahmundry and Kurnool have prepared STP proposals to give to the Central Government. RMC superintendent engineer G.R.T Om Prakash said that after sanctioning the project, they would prepare a Detailed Project Report on it. However, the people said that the Union Government should release more funds to cleanse the Godavari river on the lines of River Ganges and also the MPs and Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy should pay attention to it.
