Hyderabad: Flawed flyovers to be rectified

A senior engineering official said rubber rumble strips and view blockers have been set up.

HYDERABAD: The GHMC has yet again resorted to wasting public money for rectification of flawed flyovers got designed by it for the city.

The corporation will now be spending Rs 60 lakh on each flyover to increase the size of crash barriers, to lay rumble strips, signages and signboards.

The engineering wing blames citizens for the additional expenditure. Its officials claim that changes on existing 37 flyovers and 20 others to be constructed under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) will now need to be carried out in accordance with recommendations made by the expert committee, which has been constituted after a series of accidents on the Biodiversity flyover.

A senior engineering official said rubber rumble strips and view blockers have been set up. Speed guns to detect overspeeding have been placed and a speed limit of 40 km per hour set for drivers and motorists. There will be fines for stopping on the flyover for taking selfies and also for overspeeding. The official said following the committee’s recommendations, the GHMC placed curtain view cutters on either side to block views. He said that the various additions and changes made have cost `60 lakh on the single flyover. The same will be applicable to all 37 flyovers in the city.

“Since citizens have been creating ruckus over the design flaws and safety on the flyover on social media platforms and various other mediums, the corporation has decided to address them. This is despite all flyovers being constructed in accordance with standards.
