Bengaluru: A family of five were killed on the spot after the car they were travelling in collided head-on with a government-run ambulance in Yelahanka, early on Monday morning. The impact of the crash was so extreme that the vehicle was crushed beyond recognition, with the bodies of the deceased tangled within.
The incident took place at around 1 am at Kogilu cross in the Yehalanka as the ambulance of National Ambulance Service, jumped the median and collided head-on with the car heading towards the city. The ambulance, which was travelling well over the speed limit, was heading towards Kempegowda International Airport.
The police have identified the deceased as Dipankar Dey (46); his wife, Swagata Chaudhury (42); their son, Dhruva Dey (14); Swagata's sister, Sujaya (45) and their mother Jayanthi (65). The family, who hailed from West Bengal, were residents of RT Nagar. The driver and the nurse who were in the ambulance, have survived the accident with injuries and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
While Dipankar worked at a multi media company, his wife Swagata was a teacher at Choudhury Jain International School. The family, according to police, had been to Chennai and was returning home along with their grandmother, who was heading to Bengaluru for treatment for a kidney ailment.
Yelahanka traffic police rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to a hospital for a postmortem. Preliminary investigations revealed that it was the fault of the ambulance driver, who was driving the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner. He lost control over the vehicle and jumped the median to collide with the car coming from the opposite direction.
Police have registered a case and are waiting for the driver to recover to investigate the case.
