Is Maruti WagonR more fuel efficient than Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago?

Can the Maruti Suzuki WagonR cover more ground than the Hyundai Santro or Tata Tiago in 1 litre of fuel? We find out.

The compact hatchback space has the likes of Maruti WagonR, Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago competing in it. While India maybe moving on from the question ‘Kitna Deti Hai’, it is a factor still relevant in the compact hatchback space, where economics is at the crux of every decision taken. Thus, we compare the real world fuel efficiency of the three, to find out which travels the most amount of distance in one litre of fuel.

First, take a look at the powertrain specs of the cars we have tested.

The WagonR and Santro’s tested highway efficiency gets close to their claimed figure, however, the claimed figure for the Tiago is a little off from the highway figure we derived from our testing. This is bound to happen as claimed fuel efficiency figures are achieved in controlled environments.

Take a look at the table above in one shot it will become clear that no matter if you are driving in the city, highway or a mix of both, the WagonR returns the best fuel efficiency.

The Tiago comes in second in all aspects and it is the Santro that is last in all scenarios. This just goes on to prove a smaller engine is not always frugal.

If you own the WagonR, Santro or the Tiago and your findings are same or different than the result we got, we would love to hear about them. Reach out to us in the comments below.
