Over 8,000 Nepalis are victims of human trafficking annually: NHRC

The report said that a majority of victims are recruited through giving of false promises.

Kathmandu: A National Human Rights Commission of Nepal report has said that over 8,000 of the country's citizens are victims of human trafficking every year.

The report said that in 2013-14 and 2014-15 8,000 and 8,500 human beings were trafficked respectively.

The commission's chairman, Anup Raj Sharma, unveiled the report here on Monday, The Himalayan Times reports.

The report said that a majority of victims are recruited through giving of false promises.

The border points between Nepal-India and Nepal-Tibet are said to be the main routes used by traffickers.

The report was prepared using both primary and secondary data,said the Commission spokesperson, Mohna Ansari.

The earthquake of has greatly increased the vulnerability of trafficking especially of women and children, the report added.
