Prove money trail, Nawaz Sharif told

If you have objections, get evidence: SC

Islamabad: Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family will have to prove the money trail.

On the second consecutive day of Panama Leaks case hearing, the Supreme Court said the Sharif family has to prove money trail, “here or in trial court.”

A three-member SC bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal resumed the hearing of Panamagate during which the bench said that the matter could have been resolved by showing assets and resources.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan said the Sharifs adopted the approach to not tell anything to the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) that was tasked to inspect every available record.

Presenting arguments over Panamagate JIT report, the Sharif family’s lawyer Khawaja Harris said the JIT proceeded from the mandate as it was allowed to find answers of only 13 questions but it included two more queries by its own.

He said the JIT report is not authentic and the probe was unfair. “No probe can be carried out on the report as JIT didn’t collect evidence through legal source,” he continued.

He said the Sharif family’s stance was not taken while compiling the report. The documents could have been taken from foreign governments as per National Accountability Bureau rules.

During the lawyer’s arguments, Justice Ahsan remarked that the Prime Minister despite being given the opportunity, did not “give us anything”.

Justice Azmat Saeed told the lawyer: “If you have objections to the JIT’s report, you also have to present evidence against it.”

“We have been waiting for the money trail and the sources of income [to be revealed] since day one,” added Justice Afzal.
