Sweden: Muslim woman asked to shake hands with male colleagues, quits job

The woman said that she chose to put her hand on her heart and bow as a greeting.

Sweden: A Muslim woman from Sweden resigned from her job after she was allegedly asked to shake hands with her male colleagues against her wish.

According to a report in the Independent, the 20-year-old Fardous El-Sakka, had been working as a teacher for a group of independent schools in Helsingborg.

The woman said that she was not comfortable shaking hands with her male colleagues. Instead she chose to put her hand on her heart and bow as a greeting.

She said that one of her colleagues took offence. She also said that she was once ordered to go to a meeting with the principal and was told that she must adhere to the institution's core values if she wanted to work.

The school's principal said that "the school doesn’t differentiate between people or treat them differently. That’s what we advocate from our students, so the staff also have to do that."

The principal also added that the woman was not fired from her job but she herself chose to resign.
