Qantas passengers evacuated in Australia amid fumes in cabin

The QantasLink flight was carrying 97 passengers and five crew from the mining town of Newman to Perth in Western Australia.

Sydney: About 100 passengers on board a Qantas regional jet in Australia were evacuated via the plane's emergency slides upon landing Friday after the crew noticed fumes inside the cabin, officials said.

The QantasLink flight was carrying 97 passengers and five crew from the mining town of Newman to Perth in Western Australia. The aircraft had landed and was taxiing toward the terminal when a flight attendant alerted the pilots to fumes inside the cabin, Qantas said in a statement. The captain then ordered an evacuation.

The passengers exited the plane via emergency slides and were taken by bus to the terminal, an airport spokeswoman said.

"All passengers and crew are safe and accounted for," Qantas said in a statement.

Engineers were inspecting the aircraft to determine the cause of the fumes.
