Colorado to arm staff in all schools

According to media reports, teachers are being trained to carry guns in classrooms in Colorado so they can protect the children.

In the US state of Colorado, school staff are being taught a new defense against school shooters — to shoot back. According to media reports, teachers are being trained to carry guns in classrooms in Colorado so they can protect the children.

The scheme was motivated by the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre in which a rifle-wielding man killed 26 people, mostly young children, at a Connecticut primary school.

The three-day course consists of firearms and medical training. “In a nutshell, it is training for teachers and other school staff who are armed first responders in their schools,” Laura Caro, founder of Coloradans for Civil Liberties which paid for about 17 staff members from Colorado schools to receive the training, told 9news.

The course was set up by parents, law enforcement officers and medical experts who believe that US schools are a “soft target” for violence. The group refers to schools as “victim zones”, the BBC report said.

Under Colorado law, school staff members can carry concealed weapons in school so long as they have a permit and are designated as a security officer.
