A grenade attack took place in Assam's Chirang district on Friday and the railways suspended night trains fearing rebel attacks even as a massive security alert was sounded in the restive northeast region ahead of Republic Day.

Bangladesh has been a major concern for the northeastern states in tackling decades old problem of insurgency and illegal migration from Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Prime Minister, Ms Sheikh Hasina, said on Wednesday that her country would go to “any extent” to co-operate with India to tackle the terrorism menace.

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Tuesday said that the government wants to restore peace in Assam and hoped that good reason prevails upon the outlawed Ulfa to end the decades-long insurgency problem in the state.
