Will 2017 be a year of budget smartphones?

Smartphone makers or industrialist is gearing up to unveil their next smartphones in 2017 by evolving new strategies to increase business.

Looking at the smartphone shipments in the past few years, Samsung Electronics and Apple have unquestionably become the two biggest players in the smartphone market, especially in the high-end smartphone markets. As a result, other smartphone makers are trying to fight their hardest to keep the lights on, after what the 2016 year sales had been—it’s truly either shoot for the moon in 2017 or go bust.

One of such smartphone manufacturer is LG Electronics. After LG failed to secure popularity with its G5 smartphone released this year, it has decided to play in the mid-priced smartphone market space, which will help it increase its sales in the industry.

LG Electronics is planning to unveil five new-mid range smartphone at the CES 2017 slated to be held in Las Vegas in January next year. Earlier last week, the company announced to add new mid-range smartphones in its K-series— the K3, K4, K8 and K10, along with the Stylus 3, which will come with a stylus pen. Although, the company has not disclosed the pricing details of any of the handsets, they are expected to range between $166 and $332 (approximately Rs 11,000 to Rs 22,000).

On the other hand, the S. Korea tech giant Samsung is no longer willing to be left behind in the race in the mid-range smartphone market. The company is planning on kicking off 2017 with a new budget smartphone Galaxy J3 Emerge, which is expected to remain under $200 (approximately Rs 14,000) price bracket.

Meanwhile in India, Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio is preparing to launch featured phone with 4G capability, priced as low as Rs 1000, during January-March next year. The telecom company is aiming to increase its services in the smartphone industry by targeting mid-tier market.

Every other smartphone manufacturer or industrialist is gearing up to unveil their next smartphones in 2017 by evolving new strategies to increase business, but who will take the lead can only be seen next year.
