OnePlus One catches fire; company offers new smartphone

A miffed Gosain also demanded an answer from the Chinese smartphone makers, claiming that he could have been burnt.

In a recent incident, a man posted pictures of his burnt OnePlus One smartphone on Twitter after it caught fire while charging.

Deepak Gosian of Chandigarh took to his Twitter handle on Thursday and posted a series of pictures showing a burnt smartphone which resembled an OnePlus One. Though the phone was completely disfigured, the charging cable seemed operational.

A miffed Gosain also demanded an answer from the Chinese smartphone makers, claiming that he could have been burnt.

Gosain initially told HT that he did not get hurt as he had placed the phone to charge at a distance. He also mentioned that he is extremely irritated at OnePlus as he felt that the company is not taking the issue seriously. He also pointed out that the device had been charging for two hours before it caught fire.

In another tweet, Gosain said: “Their phones bursting and burning people but @getpeid @OnePlus_IN @OnePlus_Support won’t reply the founder is sleeping at the cost of lives”

He had also posted a video of his charred phone, with the battery completely destroyed:

Company offers new OnePlus 3

According to a Digit report, the company has offered Gosain a brand new OnePlus 3 but he has made another demand, asking the company for monetary compensation and an Apple iPhone!

Gosain was not only annoyed as the smartphone caught fire but also because he claimed that the company was trivialising the issue. He said that OnePlus’ customer care service assured him a stronger alternative in a day’s time but the company showed reluctance in rectifying the issue even after couple of days had passed.

In a statement, OnePlus said: "Our top priority is the health and safety of our customers. We are confident in the quality of our products, which all undergo industry-leading safety tests. We are already in touch with this customer, but since this is an open case, we cannot disclose any further information."

This is not the first time that an OnePlus has caught fire and there have been other instances in the past as well. However, smartphones of other companies have faced similar consequence earlier.

It is not always justified to blame the company intensely for such issues as there are several reasons that can cause a smartphone to catch fire. From weather conditions to overcharging, there are numerous reasons that can lead to the explosion of a smartphone’s battery. Yes, the problem lies with the battery solely.

Moreover, some users also tend to use counterfeit batteries after the original ones become dysfunctional after prolonged usage. While this case, as claimed by the user, was a genuine issue, there have been instances in the past that have occurred due to tinkering with the battery or overcharging.
