LG gets sued over faulty G4, V10 smartphones

The lawsuit also claims that the customer support is bad and refused to provide a solution.

LG, a well-known home appliance and smartphone manufacturer is presently being sued in a class-action lawsuit with claims from the plaintiff stating that the company sold defective G4 and V10 smartphones. The complaint also states that the company’s support was inefficient and did not provide adequate support in fixing the problems.

The lawsuit was files in US by four individuals who purchased LG’s G4 and V10 smartphones. The lawsuit states that the plaintiff’s handsets would crash and reboot interminably, which rendered their phones inoperable and unfit for use. The defect is commonly referred to as ‘bootloop defect’

The LG G4 was released in April 2016 and the company began receiving warranty claims from consumers reporting failing smartphones. The reports of complaints were also seen on various websites with regards to the LG V4, claims the lawsuit.

“LG publicly acknowledged the bootloop defect in January 2016, admitting that a “loose contact between components” causes the malfunction. Despite this admission LG did not undertake a recall or offer an adequate remedy to consumers who purchased the LG G4 phone. LG instead replaced LG G4s that failed within the one-year warranty period with phones that had the same defect. And LG refused to provide any remedy to purchasers of LG G4s that failed outside the warranty period because of the bootloop defect,” claimed the lawsuit. Similar was the case with the LG V10.

The complainants also stated that though LG attempted repairs and replaced the defective handsets with new ones, the handsets still had the same bootloop effect.

CNET states that many users have been reporting the same problems with the two smartphones on forums such as Reddit and YouTube. The lawsuit also stated that US carrier Sprint retailers had also received a memo from Sprint saying that the hardware issue has been identified with the LG G4 handsets and there is no workaround. However, the company did not notify the issue to its customers. In January 2016, LG commented to the same issue and told Android Authority that the fault was a result of a loose contact between some components.

‘In addition to getting back the money they lost from the defected phones (as well as legal costs), the suit is seeking claims for breach of implied warranty, fraudulent business practices, violation of consumer protection, unfair trade and unjust enrichment of "ill-gotten gains.",’ reports CNET.
