Apple expects LCD iPhones to drive majority of sales

Apple expects to sell more LCD iPhones as compared to those fitted with OLED displays.

There have been a lot of rumours surrounding the upcoming iPhones. However, it looks like one thing is certain, the Cupertino-based smartphone manufacturer will be launching three new iPhones this year. Out of the three new models, two are set to feature OLED panels while one will be fitted with an LCD display to keep the cost down. A new report states that Apple expects the LCD version of the iPhone to be its cash cow.

As per a report by MacRumors, xources that are involved with Apple’s supply chain claim that Apple now expects majority of its iPhone sales to come from handsets with an LCD screen.

The report goes on to state that Apple had initially wanted about equal production of iPhone models with LCD and OLED screens but now they plan to make more LCD handsets. This refers to a rumour surrounding Apple launching a lower priced 6.1-inch iPhone with an LCD display.

As of now, there is no word if Apple will be counting iPhone 7s, iPone 8s and iPhone SEs as a part of the LCD models and if they do, then it would make sense that the line-up of LCD handsets would be the top selling phones.

Analysts have stated that Apple's plans are a sign of consumers' sensitivity to the price of smartphones. They had believed that demand for the iPhone X was weaker than what they had initially forecast mainly due to its steep price point.

The report claims that Apple will keep at least one lower-priced LCD iPhone in its 2019 line up, rather than shift entirely to OLED. This strategy will be implemented to ensure customers have at least one lower-priced model to turn to.
