Smartphone meets Lego Blocks! Meet the modular LG G5

With the modular LG G5, you can mix and match accessories at will.

What does it take to create a product that catches your fancy, yet justifies a high price point? LG seems to have found the answer with the world’s first modular smartphone.

One of the highlights of the LG G5 is its modular design.

The design of LG G5 allows you to plug-and-play different hardware units to the phone -- like the LG Cam Plus, a camera module that converts the phone into a digital camera with dedicated buttons for power, shutter, record and zoom. This is attached by removing the bottom bezel of the G5, which also connects the removable battery. Other modules include a VR goggle, wide angle camera and HD audio player, which can be attached to the device without removing the bezel.

The G5 features a thin, metal unibody that feels light and easy to hold. The 5.3-inch screen is neat with 2560x1440 resolution and 554ppi quad HD IPS quantum display. Interestingly, the phone offers two cameras at the rear, one with 8MP resolution and a standard 78-degree lens and another with 16 megapixels resolution and a 135-degree wide angle lens. This will appeal to photography enthusiasts, who want wide angle shots from their smart phone. The front camera comes with 8MP resolution with standard editing features.

The G5 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and is powered by the Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM. The device comes with a good 32GB internal storage, and also allows a massive 2TB storage via micro SD. Such features require a powerful battery, but LG has only 2,800mAh to offer: a downside.

The LG G5 is priced at Rs 52,990, which does not include the optional modules. Considering the ‘flagship’ tag of the device and the fact that modularity is a refreshing change, we think this one will find its fans.

LG G5: LG Electronics launched its first modular smartphone at MWC this year. It is made out of separate components, which enables users to replace or upgrade certain functions independently.
