LG teases flagship G5 smarpthone's always on' display

The company is all set to launch the flagship G5 on February 21 at the Mobile World Congress to be held in Barcelona.

Mumbai: LG’s upcoming flagship smartphone G5 has been touted to be different from all its previous high-end handsets with exciting features like slide-out battery, USB Type-C port, and dual cameras. However, recent reports have revealed that the company is also planning to incorporate an intuitive “always-on” display.

The company demonstrated the new feature via a GIF on its Facebook page. Currently, only a few phones like Google’s latest Nexus handsets and some Motorola handsets can boast of the “always on” feature. Along with the GIF, the company also said that the device will “never go asleep while others do”.

This intuitive feature allows users to view incoming notifications, text messages, missed calls, and emails without having to turn the display on.

However, do not expect your phone’s regular display to be on all the time. Going by the teaser, it seems that the ‘always on’ feature will display basic information such as time, date, and basic notifications in a semi-lit black and white background.

Several reports have indicated that the G5 might feature an OLED screen, as it does not use traditional backlights, and can save power when only a certain part of the display is active. On the other hand, an LCD display consume considerable amount of power, even if a certain part of the display is active.
