OMG! Snapchat internship pays Rs 7.7 lakh per month

Not only Snapchat, Pinterest and Twitter are also paying their interns as high as $10,000.

Tech firms are paying very high—to the tune of a whopping $10,000 (approx Rs 6.7 lahks) each month, and that too with additional perks of $1,500 (approx Rs 1 lakh). This is more than twice the average salary a regular person earns in the US.

A report by The Guardian mentions that Snapchat pays its summer interns a whopping $10,000 per month and adds another $1,500 as perks for housing. The information comes after a survey data which reveals that top Silicon Valley’s tech companies are handing out high wages to students for summer gigs.

The survey was conducted by a Rodney Folz, a former student with the University of California Berkley who took down details from around 500 students that bagged such internships from top tech companies. These internships are usually engineering positions.

According to the survey, Pinterest offers around $10,000 per month including relocation charges and housing (approx worth $3,000). Slack and Groupon also pays out a huge sum to the tune of $7,700 each, Uber, Oracle and Microsoft are also paying around $7,300 and $7,200 approximately.

Apple gives out around $7,000 including housing, Google adds $9,000 benefits along with a $6,600 as a salary and Yahoo ticks at $6,500 + $4,500 for housing.

Here is a short list of other companies that are paying as high to their interns.

survey

The survey form was sent out via Google by Folz to a number of groups and listservs for college computer science students and tech interns. The respondents said they had scored scholarships in software, electrical engg, product design, management, industrial design, program management and a few others.

Folz also mentions that he had interned with Facebook in 2012 and bagged a good $4,800 a month. His main intention to publicise the data was so that he could highlight the information to his peers. In this way, he could inform them about the value of their work. HE also highlighted that there are a few too many students who end up working for free on startup projects and did not know that they could also get competitive wages during a summer job.

“I want students to realize that... they have worth and what they’re working on matters,” he said, adding, “They can use ... compensation to pay off student loans,” reported The Guardian.
