Google Photos app to probably get facial recognition

APK teardown of the app reveals Google's future plans to bring facial recognition and enhance social factor.

The Google Photos app is getting new features for making it more social in nature instead of being a mere photo gallery. It seems that Google’s efforts towards enhancing its social factor will take a new leap with the introduction of smart AI.

According to an APK teardown by AndroidPolice, the Google Photos app could get a facial recognition feature in the next few updates. The facial recognition feature will help you detect faces from photos and will aid personalised search in images. You will be able to search your own face or someone’s particular face from thousands of photos in your gallery.

Google will also introduce new settings for managing facial recognition tools, including grouping features and a feature to change the default image that users previously selected.

The worrying issue with this tool is related to privacy. Many users won’t be comfortable with their face popping up on other people’s phones, even if they know them. However, as the teardown reveals, Google will provide users with the option to not use the facial recognition tools.
