Cool technology, park smart in Bengaluru soon

The new system will allow motorists to book parking slots in advance through a mobile app.

Bengaluru: If the BBMP gets this right, it could end this long suffering city's parkingwoes and clear the congestion in the Central Business District. The Palike is gearing up to introduce 'smart parking' on 85 roads at fees ranging from Rs 5-15 for two wheelers and Rs 15-30 for cars per hour.

After failing to introduce the "pay and park" system twice due to various reasons, the BBMP this time is planning to mop Rs 31 crore annually from this smart parking model under public-private partnership. The new system will allow motorists to book parking slots in advance through a mobile app.

Bengaluru-based startup Building Control Solutions India, which manages smart parking in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, has bagged the tender. Once the BBMP Council gives its nod, the company will develop the infrastructure and the mobile app and will pay Rs 31.5 crore to BBMP as rent annually.

A BBMP official said, "It will all be automated. Immediately after a motorist parks his vehicle, the sensor will record the parking time and the fee will be calculated automatically once he takes out the vehicle."

14 roads will fall under Category A, while 25 others, such as Kasturba Road, Nrupatunga Road and Cunningham Road, fall under Category B. Category C has 46 roads, like BVK Iyengar Road, Lavelle Road and Haines Road. Category A (per hour): Two wheelers - Rs 15, Cars - Rs 30, Category B: Two-wheelers - Rs 10, Cars -Rs 20, Category C: Two wheelers -Rs 5, Cars -Rs 15.
