Apple appoints its first director for AI research

Apple hired Carnegie Mellon professor Ruslan Salakhutdinov as the first director for Artificial Intelligence research.

Apple has been planning on entering the AI segment since quite some time now. It seems like it’s now official as the company recently hired Ruslan Salakhutdinov, an associate professor in machine learning from Carnegie Mellon University as the company’s first director for AI research.

A Microsoft faculty fellow, Salakhutidinov primarily researches in something known as ‘unsupervised learning’ wherein they make use of ‘multilayer Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks to learn representations of video sequences.’ His research also involves the study of deep learning and neural networks.

Ruslan Salakhutdinov primarily works in the field of statistical machine learning and his research interests typically include Deep Learning, Probabilistic Graphical Models and Large-scale Optimization. He has published at least 42 papers on machine learning since 2009.

‘Excited about joining Apple as a director of AI research in addition to my work at CMU,’ Salakhutdinov tweeted on 17th October, 2016. He is also on a lookout for other research scientists to join his new department at Apple’s AI project research.
