FCC proposes rules to ban illegal international robocalls

The FCC revealed that it received 52,000 robocall complaints last year.

Robocalls are a worldwide nuisance and now the FCC has proposed rules to ban illegal spoofed text messages and calls originating from outside the US.

The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009 already prohibits illegal spoofing but it does not cover texts or calls originating from overseas. The new legislation is aimed at closing those loopholes, along with putting a stop on spoofed MMS messages and one way interconnected VoIP calls, reported Engadget.

The FCC revealed that it received 52,000 robocall complaints last year, which included reports about international phone scam targeting Chinese-Americans. The scam actually resulted in New Yorkers getting conned of about USD 3 million.
