Public Cloud market to grow to 208 billion in 2016: Gartner

The research house also highlighted that the highest area of growth will be within the adoption of cloud infrastructure services

American research and advisory firm Gartner has predicted that Public Cloud services are expected to grow 17.2 per cent in 2016, which will take their total market worth of these services to 208.6 billion dollars.

Gartner research director Sid Nag told TechWeekEurope that the need for IT modernisation and technology innovation, are major factors that will lead to this growth.

Nag said that the growth of public cloud is increasingly rapidly as organisations are saving higher per cent of their budgets by adopting these services. To be precise, Gartner’s 2015 cloud adoption survey indicated that companies are now saving up to 14 per cent more due to public cloud adoption.

The research house also highlighted that the highest area of growth will be within the adoption of cloud infrastructure services, forecasted to grow by 42.8 per cent in 2016. Next in line will be software-as-a-service (SAAS), expected to grow by 21.7 per cent in 2016 to hit $38.9 billion.

Though the future seems bright for public cloud usage, Nag said that there are still a few hiccups here and there, as there are many companies who are still not using public cloud services.

Nag said: “There are still challenges for organisations as they make the move to the cloud. Even with the high rate of predicted growth, a large number of organisations still have no current plans to use cloud services.”

Cyber-security barrier

One of the main obstructions to cloud adoption revolves closely around alarming rates of cyber crimes happening these days. Even though numerous public cloud providers have a strong track record regarding data protection, companies have been cagey regarding usage of public clouds.

Gartner says that public cloud services offered by leading cloud providers are secure but the main challenge for companies to use them in a secure manner. Organisations needed to be briefed to overcome the fear associated with security concerns.

The research firm also mentioned that organisations are opening up to a combination of cloud services from multiple providers, which will further increase, as more organisations employ hybrid cloud infrastructure and systems.

With Microsoft, Amazon and other cloud services growing rapidly, the future of cloud storage seems brighter than ever.
