iPhone X' FaceID will recognise only one face; has a quick disable shortcut

The feature has replaced TouchID which allowed up to five users to add their fingerprints to unlock the phone.

Apple introduced the FaceID authentication method with its super flagship, the iPhone X. The security feature only allows one user’s face to be registered with one device. The feature has replaced TouchID which allowed up to five users to add their fingerprints to unlock the phone. The TouchID however, is still present on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

This has raised concerns for potential iPhone X buyers who usually add their close ones’ fingerprints on their phones. Apple is yet to confirm whether it will allow more users to add their FaceID on a single device in the future.

Apple’s Craig Federighi has revealed another feature in a mail he sent to a designer saying “There are two mitigations: if you don't stare at the phone, it won't unlock. Also, if you grip the buttons on both sides of the phone when you hand it over, it will temporarily disable Face ID.”

Federighi also noted that the FaceID can be unlocked while wearing sunglasses as well. However in case of a sunglass which does not allow IR projection, the user will have to remove their shade.
