2020 Apple Watch will be thinner yet brighter thanks to Micro LED screens

The micro LED screens would give Apple the edge over Samsung and other rivals in the segment.

The news of Apple Watches making the switch from OLED screens to the cutting edge Micro LED displays came out last year we likely won’t see the tech come to the Apple Watches until at least next year.

According to the Economic Daily News, Apple is working with two Taiwanese companies to implement Micro LED screens to the watches by as soon as 2020.

This development would allow the watches to be thinner and lighter than before, a welcome change given how chunky the modern smartwatches are getting. Apple could alternatively use the same size but pack in a bigger battery to deliver much more juice to the devices while keeping the size the same.

The newer screens will also be much brighter and will represent colours more accurately. They will also refresh at higher rates but consume lesser energy compared to the current devices. The micro LED screens would give Apple the edge over Samsung and other rivals in the segment.

The two Taiwanese suppliers reportedly are Yuchuang and Suibao. The move to source screens from Taiwan will also reduce Apple’s dependency on Korea.
