Chennai is commemorating the first anniversary of the 26/11 attacks in unique ways — from making animated films to pay homage to the victims, to facilitating a common urge to kill the terrorists in the virtual world — Chennaiites are looking back in anger and grief.
When E R Socrates and his team, who are students of MAAC Academy, were given the theme ‘love’ for the national animation film-making contest, they decided that the best way to express that emotion would be though a recreation of the tragedy in their animation film, Broken String. Socrates explains, “It’s a touching story of a puppeteer who mourns his beloved wife, who died in the Mumbai terror attacks.” The movie was the only animated film from the South which was nominated for the ‘Best Animated Film Award’ at the country’s top animation awards, (24 FPS Awards) that were held recently in Mumbai.
And it’s not just films, online games based on the 26/11 terror attacks are also becoming popular. For instance, Operation Mumbai, an online game inspired by the attacks, has the gamer get into the shoes of a cop who has to kill the terrorists. Akshay S, an MBA student, says, “I really like the idea of a game on the terror attacks. It gives me an opportunity to pay tribute to the 26/11 martyrs. Another, similar game called Mumbai Rescue is also a hit among all my friends.”
