I have always thought of fabric as the Alpha and Omega of the fashion alphabet and creating fabrics that have a positive effect on the wearer and the environment has been my passionate endeavour.
It was Rachel Carson’s revolutionary book Silent Spring that left a deep impression on my consciousness. Carson remains an example of what one committed individual can do to change the direction of society.
Today, the fact that we are subjecting ourselves to slow poisoning by misuse of chemical pesticides seems common currency but in 1962 when Carson’s book exploded on the world, it stirred a social revolution.
Movements demanding the protection of the environment sprung up, gathering momentum, till finally in 1981, the first Earth Day was announced, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) was formed and a campaign became law.
The seeds of environment awareness firmly embedded in my psyche, furthered by the belief that fashion is not just about pretty clothes, but about pretty clothes with a purpose, a direction and a philosophy, I extended my efforts of fabric innovation into the green terrain. I have just release an organic silk collection, which is dedicated to nature’s renewal, taking the form of evening dresses and tunics which are fluid and yet sculpted. Using pure vegetable dyes, the garments imbue a natural radiance and lustre. The palette is perennial greens such as mint and eucalyptus as well as opaque grayish that hues are cool and sophisticated. My prior fabric innovations have been with corn fibre, bamboo knit and khadi tencel (tencel and modal are manmade eco-fibres.).
I have always been obsessed with purity, these two integral parts of my system have fuelled my experiments with eco-fabric engineering, to help create organic fibres, which will make the wearer and the world a better place.
