Cosmos of Life by Saraswati L. is a glimpse of the harmony existing between man and nature, as derived from the world of ancient myths and folklores.
Man, as represented by a Lord Krishna-like-being, often dressed in traditional attire, is found lounging peacefully amongst lush fields and foliage, surrounded by herds of cattle. His flute, symbolic of the single, fluid melody linking man and his surrounding is presented time and again in the canvases.
In fact, the foliage framing each of the characters add to the whole effect. Whispering voices from elusive faces partially hidden behind the foliage, animals regarding the scenes, almost become a visual extension of man’s surrounding — his cosmos, comprising whispered thoughts, nature and past traditions, mingling with modernity. Some of the paintings also provide a glimpse of an Edenic existence with the figure of the woman almost Eve-like, vines swirling around her sensuous form, at one with nature — a vision of purity and creation.
The artist’s style and deliberate attempts to place the characters in a rustic setting, spells out her vision of the close relation between simplicity of pastoral life and a harmonious existence in this world.
The exhibition is on display at Alankrtiha Art Gallery till January 4, 2010.
