Putting the spark back into one’s relationship just got a hypnotic twist of sorts. Many couples in the city intending to revive their love lives are opting for hypnosis-aided sex therapy to boost their relationships. The technique is said to help couples resolve not only their personal prejudices, but also enhance their confidence levels when it comes to making their marriages tick.
Speaking about the same, Shiva, a hypnosis trainer with Mind Miracle based in Chennai says, “Rifts start appearing in the relationships of most married couples after a few years of living together. The spouses tend to get obsessed with the shortcomings of each other rather than focusing on their good qualities. Our programs help them get past such trivial misunderstandings as we make them look at the rosier side of life. Several well-to-do couples in Chennai approach me on a weekly basis. They want to learn self-hypnosis, to help them eliminate negativity from their relationship.”
So how does this technique work? Dr Prakash Subramanian, a clinical hypnotherapist, who has been practicing for over a decade explains, “Sexual dysfunctions often arise due to impediments in communication and intimacy, traumatic sexual experiences in the past and negative role modelling on part of the parents. There are interesting case studies about how hypnotherapy helped people with deep-seated problems get over their complexes and lead happily married lives.”
He elaborates, “Take for instance, the case of a boy who was being treated for erectile dysfunction. Upon conducting hypnosis, it was found that as a child, he was pampered by his family and often dressed up like a girl. This later turned out to be the reason for his impotency. Hypnotherapy allows a patient to be treated on their own that has significant benefits in terms of reduced nervousness and personalised attention.”
Ramalingam S, (name changed on request), a business professional says, “After our marriage, my wife and I were unable to see eye to eye on several issues. As a result, we found ourselves unable to lead a satisfying conjugal relationship. Recently we consulted a hypnotherapist who helped us overcome many preconceived notions and prejudices that we harboured against each other as a couple. Now we have learnt to enjoy each other’s company despite the differences we may have and it became the reason for reviving our relationship as well.”
Dr Prakash, who has dealt with numerous cases like this says, “I have many clients in Chennai, who I help out on a regular basis. We use handwriting analysis to ascertain the character of a person. Based on this, we come to know if a person is individualistic or an introvert that helps us zero in on the problem areas. In certain cases, if a couple has lost interest in sex, we establish trance induction and trigger memories of their young days that help them see their partners from a new. This takes them right back to their enthusiastic selves.”
Saraswati S, a marital counsellor says, “In today’s stress-driven life, most couples lack understanding and are unable to devote time to their partners. Hence complications arise, which in turn affect their love lives too. Understanding and appreciating one’s spouse is key to a successful relationship. Hypnosis is a procedure that helps people do just this.”
However, there are also those who feel that hypnosis is not an end-all and be-all solution. Dr T Kamaraj, chairman of Indian Association of Sexology says, “Hypnosis can be used only to solve certain specific problems. Nevertheless, it’s recommended that one consult a specialist when it comes to sexual problems as self-administered procedures may not have all the answers.”
