The trend of combining international fashion labels with Indian ones to create a look for oneself is popular in the city. It could be a Roberto Cavalli button down shirt combined with a Rahul Khanna-Rohit Gandhi dhoti pant. Or an Anand Kabra saree teamed with Louis Vuitton stilettos. Many socialites and celebs in the city are seen experimenting with interesting combinations.
“I do the mix and match thingie all the time. I love combining the kurta-overcoat created by Raj Shroff with jeans from Guess or Mango. I recently bought an LBD from Mango. It’s short and tight, and looked fabulous with traditional Indian designer jewellery,” says actress Aindrita Ray.
“I feel that adding an Indian touch to a Western design sets us apart especially when we’re travelling abroad. It definitely gives you on edge over others.”
For photographer Wasim Khan who is small built, it is a challenge to find clothes that fit him well. Yet he makes it a point to have a blend of Indian and Western design labels in his wardrobe and combine the two to create a look. “I love jackets by Manoviraj Khosla and wear only his label when it comes to jackets.
“I am a jeans-and-shirt kind of guy. So you will find me combining international brands of jeans such as Armani or even a no-fuss Levi’s with shirts by Indian designers.” “A Rohit Bal tunic or a Rajesh Pratap Singh shirt with jeans is a good combination,” he says.
Designer Neetu Gupta recommends that you can experiment with your look and go a bit whacky with your combinations.
“Try wearing a saree created by an Indian designer with boots bought from abroad. Or wear a dress with an international label along with traditional Kolhapuri chappals.”
Her personal fave combination is ‘a Jean Paul Gaultier shirt with jeans bought locally.’
“We have Indian roots and international wings. Style and individuality only comes from combining the two sensibilities,” she advises.
