Film, television and theatre artiste Rajit Kapur, famous for his National Award-winning role of Gandhi in The Making of Mahatma, was in the city for a play.
“I’ve been to Chennai several times in the past, always to stage a play. But I’ve never really had the time to explore the city and find out more about it. When I go to any new city, I like to walk around the place to experience the sights and sounds for myself. I haven’t done that here yet; I’m hoping I get the time for it soon. But from what I’ve seen of the city, I think Chennai is much greener than the other cities. Also, the people here are very organised, there’s a certain discipline during performances, which is lacking in many north Indian states,” says Rajit, who has worked alongside artistes from Chennai.
“The funny thing is, I’ve met Revathi and Shobana when we worked together in Bengaluru, but have never had the chance to meet them while I’m in Chennai,” he laughs.
Rajit has worked in all of Shyam Benegal’s films since 1993. “He has given me a variety of roles in his films, and not put a stamp on me or slotted me into a particular kind of image. Shyam Benegal is a sensitive filmmaker who trusts his actors, and that’s one reason I love working with him,” Rajit says.
Ask him about the other filmmakers he is inspired by, and he says, “I’ve watched almost all of Mani Ratnam’s movies and I really like the way he deals with different issues. Kamal Haasan is another artiste whom I like watching.”
The actor has worked on several films in the past few months and has three new releases lined up. “Two of my films, Well done Abba and Do paise ki dhoop, char aane ki baarish will release early next year. A third film, a thriller titled Marega Saala, will also be releasing soon.”
